The wife of Fernando Ricksen told of the heartbreaking chat she had with their daughter following the death of the Rangers legend. Veronika, 33, said she told Isabella, 7, that "Pappy is looking down at you" after Ricksen died last week following a brave fight with motor neurone disease aged 43. His funeral led to a wave emotional tributes from around football, including fierce Glasgow rivals Celtic. And after the Ibrox hero was given a send-off, Veronika told of the agonising chat she held with her daughter. The ex-model and tennis player told Daily Record : "At Fernando’s funeral, we tried to make it as beautiful a day for Isabella as we could. "We told her she needed to say goodbye to Pappy. I said, ‘Look how many people are here to say goodbye to Pappy, look how many people loved him.’ "She said, ‘Wow, it’s amazing, mummy.’ It has been hard to explain to her. Because Fernando was sick for so long, I don’t know if she understands fully she won’t see him again." She added: "We’ve told her he’s a star now. Every evening, we go outside and I pick the brightest star and say, ‘Look, Isabella, Pappy is looking down at you.’ "Once she said she could see his face and it broke my heart. “She will grow up without a dad and that hurts. It’s so hard. She’s still so little. I lost my father when I was seven, too, and I think about him all the time." But Veronika also said she was blown away by the reaction of Scottish football. She continued: "The funeral was the hardest day of my life but also one of the most amazing. "Fernando would have been deeply moved by how many people attended. I’m so thankful to Rangers and all the nurses from St Andrew’s Hospice."
