The video will start in 8 Cancel A massive fire has broken out at the Hotpoint factory in Peterborough this evening. A huge cloud of thick black smoke can be seen rising over the city as residents report hearing explosions. Horrified witnesses are sharing photos and videos of the explosions and a thick plume of smoke rising up into the sky. One resident said locals have been told to shut their doors and windows as the smoke coming from the site is allegedly "toxic". Explosions can be heard every few seconds according to witnesses. Shocking pictures from the scene show a row of at least 20 HGV trailers completely ablaze in a lorry parking area. A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: “We are currently on the scene assisting fire and ambulance on Celta Road, Woodston, at a large fire. “Please assist us by keeping the area clear so our vehicles can get where they need to. “There may be road closures as well, so please check for details.” Police have asked people to keep the area clear for emergency services amid warnings roads could be closed. A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told Cambridgeshire Live: "It’s big incident at Hotpoint warehouse, Shrewsbury Avenue in Peterborough. "We’ve got lots of fire engines there and it is something serious. "That’s all we know, for now."
