Hotels in Benidorm have not received a single compensation claim for food poisoning since the UK courts clamped down on the money-spinning practice. The Spanish resort paid out almost £50 million in two years after a 500% explosion in claims with mainly Brits claiming they had been laid low. In 2006 UK holidaymakers lodged 35,000 claims for illness on their holidays. Hotels in Majorca alone paid out £42m. The claims epidemic threatened to end all-inclusive package holidays and triggered a ferocious legal fightback from the travel industry. In response the government introduced a law limiting the costs firms can command for making holiday sickness claims. Hotels and tour operators began investigating people for making fake claims and involving the police. Now the trade seems to be a thing of the past with not a single claim presented in Benidorm this year. A spokesman for Hosbec, the association of hoteliers on the Costa Blanca, said it was a result of the penalties imposed by Brit courts on anyone convicted of making bogus claims. They range from fines to jail terms. A spokesman for UK industry watchdog ABTA, which was part of the campaign to end the false claims, said: "Holiday sickness scams have cost the travel industry millions of pounds in recent years. "Anyone tempted to launch a fake holiday sickness claim should be aware that it is a form of fraud. "The courts take a very dim view of fraudulent claims of this nature and if found guilty they can result in a hefty fine, a custodial sentence as well as a permanent criminal record. "Clearly the message is getting out to the general public that they should only submit a compensation claim if they have legitimately fallen ill and the consequences for submitting an unjustified claim can be very severe.'' Four members of one Liverpool family were each jailed for three months for making a false claim against tour operator Jet2Holidays following a 2015 Benidorm break. Two other Brits who made a fake food poisoning bid after staying in the resort were fined £15,000. In each case the tourists claimed they suffered nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea and vomiting for days and even presented medical reports. But at least one came unstuck as police showed photographs he had posted on social media of him and his partner enjoying their holiday with no sign of any illness.
